A weekend in Alicante: castle, old quarters and the working waterfront

Alicante's centre is compact enough for a weekend, but the city makes more sense when the castle, old quarters and port are treated as one landscape. Benacantil rises immediately behind Postiguet beach, while streets around Santa María and San Nicolás lead towards the Explanada and harbour.

First day: read the city from above

Visit Santa Bárbara Castle early enough to explore without racing the closing time. Access arrangements can change, so check the municipal site before setting out. From the slopes and terraces, identify the old centre, Postiguet, the port and the line of the coast.

Descend through Santa Cruz or the historic streets according to mobility and weather. The hillside has steep steps. Santa María, MACA and the Co-cathedral offer different layers of the city, but opening days should decide the order rather than a fixed itinerary.

Second day: coast and civic centre

Walk the Explanada as a connection between city and port, not just a tiled photo stop. Continue around the waterfront or use the morning for the archaeological museum if heat, rain or an exhibition makes that a better choice. Postiguet is an urban beach: observe flags and seasonal safety information.

Keep the weekend realistic

  • Choose two major interiors per day and leave room for streets and meals.
  • Reserve Tabarca for a separate weather-dependent day rather than forcing it into a short weekend.
  • Use TRAM, bus or walking for the centre and check late services for outlying accommodation.
  • Carry water and plan shade during hot periods.
